The mainline churches did not die off. They secularized into progressivist politics.

But to turn the state into God and to create some kind of state religion, isn't this exactly the kind of stuff the Bible warns about? The state can't provide salvation. We can only gain salvation by struggling through our own weaknesses, overcoming them and growing as a person.
