Is he the most based of all? Peter Hitchens made me rethink legalization after many years of being a true blue libertarian on every issue.
Personal choices don't always make for good public policy. Just because I believe an individual has freedom to use drugs if they so desire on the basis of respect for self-determination does not mean I should automatically assume legalization policy will produce a desired outcome ( a more prosperous nation, living longer, producing more wealth, babies born and raised in good homes.. traits of what I would consider a society trending upwards).
Hitchens would contest that lax drug enforcement has allowed proliferation of abuse by not coming down on users hard enough which would discourage use by the population. Thus all the societal consequences of drug abuse on physical and mental health has rises while the cost of the half assed drug war skyrockets as abusers/suppliers increase in population.
The question is who determines what substances are bad and which ones remain legal and on what principles is that judgement made?
