Bill Clinton won in 1993 because he was chill and smoked weed and George H. W. Bush was a complete spastic war monger. The Bush W. era was basically a conservative backlash to being defeated by center-left protectionist policies.

I think Hillary lost in 2016 because she wanted to project the fact that she was just like her husband politically, but clearly she doesn't smoke weed. She reminded people too much of George H. W. and Trump became the "Third Way" candidate in the primaries.
