Becouse it was inspired by earlier attack on WTC which didn't succed so they had to think of something better to convince the crowd. There is less evidence for some guys stealing some plane then for many trucks with explosives driving in the middle of one of the biggest metropolies in the world. If they have a truck they are able to track down owners etc and it creates problems. This way they could just plant explosives and noone is even looking for any as airplane is a reason of collapse.

to have a specific cultural effect and provide some theatricality. There had been hints about a plane attack on WTS in various tv/movies for like a decade, just like literature in the decades before titanic.

It would've take weeks/months for each tower. During which bomb sniffing dogs would've detected them, unless somebody calls them off, which is what actually happened.

Easy answer:

1: To collect insurance on the airplanes lost by the Airlines. Millions of dollars.
2: For the Saudis who owned the buildings to be able to file for lost claims on the structures, they needed to have them collapse due to something outside of their control. Had their security personnel let the bombs in, they would've been at fault.
3:Because bombs in buildings aren't scary enough for people, they needed a new fear, something insanely brilliant that they would have to escalate their dread of their new enemy.
4: Bombs in buildings are easy to dispute, even the OKC bombing was looked at sketchy. So planes were undeniable.
