The free market policies between 1880 and 1945 turned Argentina from a sleepy backwater into one of the top 3 wealthiest economies. The government in the 1970s was not really free market, it was too busy trying to deal with Peron's legacy of hyperinflation to enact any meaningful policy change. It was a pretty shit government that only lasted 7 years, unlike Pinochet which really steered Chile into growth. Under free market policies Chile went from being as poor as Peru to catching up with us.
