These stories aren't real, buddy.

They come out with a new "world's longest sniper kill EVER" article every month. Here are a few facts that they all have in common:

1) The shooter is always either an American, Canadian, or British soldier. Apparently no other country in the world has snipers.

2) The "record-breaking distance" is always either the same distance as the last six articles or slightly longer (as in, 10m). Some articles actually mention distances that are SHORTER than previously-claimed distances.

3) There are never any photographs or evidence or details of ANY KIND.

It's just dumb propaganda. This is not a real thing that actually happens once a month, and if you believe otherwise you really ought to read the news more often.

This is not the only thing that works like this, by the way. There are dozens of similar stories/types of content which are reliably manufactured and posted, like clockwork. Another good one is "the enemy ran away from the battle dressed like a woman (haha, fags)"...this one has been repeated in the media every few months for something like 200 years.

Anyone who shoots can tell you that a bullet us only stable until it slows to subsonic, then there is no way to predict where the bullet will hit.

There is no bullets that will stay stable that long, so that leaf was just lobbing bullets into a crowd, shooting hundreds of bullets at a stationary target, or just got really lucky

How is this even sniping? At this distance the bullet's trajectory is subject to so many factors outside of control of the shooter, it's just a statistical gamble to hit the target. You could plant your ass in the safety of your base and take shots all day with your anti-material rifle and eventually you will kill someone through sheer coincidence.

How is that different from doing the same thing with a burst from a heavy mg? Or lobbing an artillery shell at your target? If the minute of angle is below 1, it's gambling, not sniping.

Typically a sniper has only a single shot before his target takes cover and he must relocate, which can take hours. So they wait until the range is short enough to guarantee a hit. If the sniper can just remain in a position and take pot shots at enemies, it's because the enemy is not really a danger. Now most countries aren't exactly known to invade third-world shitholes and terrorize the populace for decades, which eliminates the opportunity to make these shots.

Oftentimes you can't close the gap, primarily when trying to eliminate enemy snipers. However if kill counts are what matters than Germans are still garbage snipers with Soviets being first in confirmed kills followed by a few snipers from random countries and a ton of snipers from the Anglosphere.

However in all honesty Anglos are better because Anglos actually have a long history of sniping, the ghille suit was a Scottish invention, anti-tank rifles and anti-materiel rifles evolved from the British adopting elephant guns to punch through metal shields some Germans tried to use to advance into no man's land, the Americans have a long history of using rifles against Indians where linear warfare was ineffective and the Green Jackets were one of the first true sniper units in European history, with Ferguson making one of the first breech loading rifles in the hopes of creating a more efficient sniper unit.

Yeah, the gun culture difference is certainly a factor, although one should mention the use of the needler rifles of the hessian Jägers against the continental army and the subsequent adaption that prompted in all armies. It's not like wanting to shoot accurately is a cultural quirk.

Also soviet sniper numbers are a little iffy because they did not exactly shy away from adjusting them for morale reasons during that particular time. I personally would put more trust in the meticulously kept sniper-book of a wehrmacht sniper than the "confirmed" kills as dictated by the political commissar.
