I think this was a thing back in the late 90's / early 2000's. Everyone was saying how Sweden is like a paradise where everything is free and everyone lives in luxury.

Yep. Every day, some friend or teacher would note that Sweden™ was a land of generous prosperity, where janitors make the same amount of money as CEO's and everyone loves it, and they would mention that swedes are more intelligent and better at geography (inserting some wretched bullshit picture that 4/5 adult americans couldn't locate the united states on a map), and they rehabilitate prisoners by providing them needed amenities in prison like giant open spaces and good food

then they would mention that video where a fellow gets angry when people say "america is number one." It was a strawman video. Not once in my twenty years have i heard a person say America was number one in anything unless they were being snide and spitting it out with "recognize my cynicism or else i'll die" attitude. But the video made it seem as though mouth-breathing smug morons ran through the streets chanting it and that good-and-intelligent-people™ needed to set the record straight every time they got, and they would always do so by mentioning the utopia of "SUHWEEDDEN."

Now don't get me wrong. I bleed blue, my parents do, my friends do. But nothing gets that same blood boiling faster than those who spit on America and upraise Sweden as the atheist God's heaven on Earth.

My anger isn't fair to you; it's born out of people who drank propaganda and dribbled it out their mouths every chance they got, and it just so happened a sizable portion of those slimy dribbles were about Sweden. I should emphasize the points of Sweden they always mentioned were terribly wrong or so totally skewed as to contradict their arguments, but that a dozen like-minded individuals would listen with open-mouthed admiration of their genius. I lived in a world where your intelligence was measured in proportion to how much you wanted to move to Sweden. I'm sorry, but that was how I learned to hate you. I'm from the united states.
