Political belief all comes from philosophy. So my advice for some starter reading is to start off with some ethics with Nichomachean ethics. Then Try some more abstract stuff with the Symposium, all about love and duty. Then delve into the Republic. There is also 'Politics' by Aristotle. Of course, there are a bunch of other Greek works (I favor the stoics) but that should get you enough to understand the basics. Then jump into Cicero - a genius roman statesman. On the Republic, on Duties and on the ends of good an evil are the works of his I would focus on (if politics is your aim).

After that you can read (or re-read) some more common names with far better insight. Hobbes, Rousseau, I would add Spinoza as well. Locke is good. If you have those under your belt the sky becomes the limit because the industrial revolution brought about a large proliferation of political theory.
