They went round asking questions like: "in this job you'll be interacting with people from diverse backgrounds, are you okay with that?"

They kept prodding and prodding at diversity/quota related questions. I swear they opened with "What do you know about diversity?" something like that.

Was the most unbearable hour of my life.

After HR became a career path in business university it has gotten out of hand with these endless interviews cycles and they are made by some 3rd party consult agency. They are just cretaring useless work for justifying their HR job.

As someone that works for a Big 4 accounting firm (PwC, KPMG, Deloitte, E&Y), they definitely aren't bad - especially for jumpstarting your career. I have recruiters sucking my dick weekly and I graduated with a shit GPA and no extracurricular.

That said, it is about 25% cult-ish, especially when they bring on new hires. I came in as an experienced hire, so I didn't go through this - but their bread and butter are fresh out of ivy-league schools. They try to mind control them with things like "work life balance" and we love you, etc.. etc.. this job is fun! etc... It's all bullshit as they push them to pump out 60 hour weeks doing boring shit like audit, tax returns, or other drone work.

It's not all bad though, there are niche groups in Big 4 that aren't drone work related more towards the consulting side. At the end of the day though it is the closest thing to a pyramid scheme - only so many will make it up to the partner level - no matter how hard you try. It mostly comes down to having an extrovert personality type of rubbing other people's dicks, otherwise you don't stand a chance.

Up to you. I would avoid audit and tax return preparation like the plague, but there are entry level positions that are way better. Either way, they push the lowest level employees to work the hardest/longest on the most time consuming boring work. That's just how it goes.

however I will mention 2 things:

1) They pay ABSOLUTE SHIT for starting salary out of college. My jaw dropped when I heard they paid ~$50-55k in my area for entry level. Given that they want everyone to work 45-60 hour weeks every week, that's a joke salary.

2) Moving up in the Big 4 isn't too hard, especially salary wise. My biggest tip is to move around between Big 4, they fucking love to recruit other Big 4 employees with a decent salary hike. I've known people who have literally worked at all 4 of the Big 4.

That said, not sure what you can do with a simple econ degree. I also know that Big 4 can be pretty selective of who they hire, plenty of dumb fucks are even getting masters and starting at entry level Big 4. I feel bad for them. There are still plenty of other jobs, hell my first job was credit & collections for a large company that sells to retail stores (basically came down to customer relations with the likes of Best Buy) that paid $50k before I jumped ship to Big 4 with a fat salary boost.

HR people consistently have zero clue who is or isn't a good employee, which is why at all the previous companies I've worked for that have large HR departments, all the candidates they'd bring us to pick from were always completely useless and don't actually have any of the skills they put on their resume.

The people who know who is best capable of the job are the people supervising that job and the people doing that job, not some cog in the bureaucracy engine.

Unless you're talking specialized work, like software performance consulting or something. I've done that kind of work, and it's not rare for those kinds of consultants to bill $500/hour.

Either they're useless, in which case its not cheaper because they're going to bill you 300 hours for 150 hours worth of work and one of your permanent employees is going to have to spend 100 hours redoing it/cleaning it up anyways, or it's someone who knows their shit well enough for it to actually be in their financial best interest to be a contract-based consultant, in which case it's going to cost you a good $20k/week.
