Nationalism is a countries immune system. Nationalism is what makes someone country(and future) first ancestors(past) second. Its what lets immigration work.

Its what Europe should really be looking to emulate if they are going to have a chance of dealing with the migration they have taken in. You have to be proud of your country and want to be of that country.

Often people will criticize nationalists for being proud of things they didn't actually achieve, while they are simultaneously ashamed of "atrocities" they didn't commit.
If you father achieved great things, it's natural to be proud of it. The same goes for your grand-father and then (to a lesser extent) the rest of your ancestors.

It's good to have some institution that got your back. Previously, it was the family that took up this role. However, strong ties to a big nation state are preferable to strong ties to family because there's always fighting between the rivaling families. Combining these two institutions on equal terms with one another is also very difficult.
