Why?
I can't imagine it takes much investment to earn more than a dollar with 8 hours of labour.

Even a hole in the ground dug with naught but pickaxes can have great monetary value. An underground lair at $10 per cubic metre would be a pretty sweet deal for the African upper-class who tend to buy expensive things they don't need, and digging shouldn't cost more than a dollar or two per cubic metre.
