I live in NYC, very close the airport and often order for my mom who has arthritis and can't often commute on her own. Not true. I drive for Uber and Lyft, and I'd say that 60-80% of passengers tip on Lyft. I have gotten tips from Uber passengers, but since you need to do it in cash, most people are unable to do it or forget - closer to 5% of Uber passengers ever tip.

As for when the driver gets the tip, we see and get it as soon as you do it, so almost immediately. If I wanted to cash out of my pay for the week, I'd be eligible to have that money hit my bank account the same day. That said, we have to rate passengers as soon as the ride is over, so there's no way (on Lyft) to rate a passenger poorly if they do not tip, as drivers routinely do on Uber. However, if I happened to rate you highly and you didn't tip, then I ever get another request from you, I may not accept it. Or I might accept it, be totally nice as I give you your ride, and then just 1 star you so no other drivers will want to pick you up.

Just because I'm "working" to drive around assholes doesn't mean I'm earning enough to pay my bills. If someone has a low rating, it usually means there's something VERY wrong with them. If I accept a low rated passenger and they bring their hairy dog in my car, then I can't continue earning money afterwards until I vacuum my car, simple as that. Likewise, if they throw up in my car, my ability to earn money is over for the day. Short rides to the grocery store where the nigger wants me to wait as she shops around also eat up my time and do not pay well enough to earn minimum wage.
