"apocalypse" is a lot less specific than "asteroid will hit the earth". Apocalypse could be due to nuclear war or AI singularity, both of these are much more likely than asteroid.

no one is arguing that an asteroid will not hit the earth within 100m years. humans have been around for maybe 100k years. we will be long gone or it will likely be inconsequential to avert by the time it happens, either way.
