>>130735736
And what an election result like this means to them who knows politics is that if a solid red seat can be converted into a chancy purple one, then seats which are already chancy purple ones should now be assumed to be blue.

The DNC will be gunning for a hundred seat swing in 2018; they'll get a double digit one, with the question mark to what that sum is potentially being the end to Republican control of congress. The house at the very least might at this point be seen as desperate defense, the Senate being safe only for the number of Democratic seats up for contests.

Keep laughing it up, fool, if your end goal is to see the Republicans blownout. You don't even know how to take these two articles, or what they're informing you of between the lines. Yes, small individual donors are withholding their own money this term, rightly predicting these special races were lost causes, because they think as the larger majority of posters ITT do, with the wrong-headed understanding that such money is simply wasted if a seat isn't gained. Which left it to the big donors to pick up the slack (as they did) for the individual races to prove that the needle can be moved. This WAS proved by the various over performs of Democrats in these Republican districts, which is is what will inform the Democrats during the NEXT critical (as this one was not) fundraising cycle, come 2018. And having not contributed this time around they'll feel more empowered to give at least as much as usual. Probably more.

What remains to be seen is whether Trump can keep up his ability to fundraise.

That is true which is why anyone taking results of elections now as proof of 2018 even if Ossoff one is a dumbass, the Senate field is slanted against Dems in 18 already which is why the House results for that time are what would actually matter instead of now.

The election was basically 50/50 if >polling averages were anything to go by, it's just slightly more voters in the area are Republican over conservative. Handel seemed to present herself horribly in public but Ossoff got a lot of bad rep for just how much money his campaign got which proved a double edged sword in perception.

That's also true which is why the Republicans have an edge in that area no matter what until something significant comes out against Trump or the economy goes in a huge slump which is unlikely up to 2018. Personally I don't expect the Dems to even gain a House majority until 2022 at least since the sliding scale of party incompetence eventually has to shift away from them, but it's up to Trump and the Congressional GOP to do what they can witht heir majority to maintain it as long as they can.

True. I live in the Pacific Northwest and have liberal friends (because that's better than no friends....and many I've known my whole life.) But I also have a lot of conservative friends, and here's what I notice:

1. Most white conservatives I know married or are dating other whites, but maybe 25% married Hispanics, Asians or or blacks. (Usually men.) They also have friends of other races though also plenty of white friends. I know some cons who are racist, but aren't publicly cruel or oppressive to others. They're polite. They just follow their preferences privately. Most don't care one way or another about gays, some are even supportive, but they're tired of having "causes" shoved down their throats when they feel there are far more important things going on.

2. I know a lot of non-white cons, even blacks. They are all extremely genuine in their beliefs and convictions and many of them voted for Trump. I'm reminded of the groups that showed up for Shia's livestream.

3. My con friends all give to charity--even the non Christians. They all are involved in some project or money drive to help poor folks/homeless, disadvantaged kids, wounded/disabled vets, etc. I have few lib friends who give to charity; they all virtue signal so I'm sure I'd know. A few support eco causes--Sierra Club or SPCA/animal stuff--but I know cons who do that too, and two Repub women who literally spends 3/4 of their paid vacays every year helping starving kids overseas.

4. Literally 95% of my white lib friends are married to whites. Those few interracial relationships which endure seem genuine and love-based, not token or fetishistic, but they're rare. Their friend groups/cliques are almost entirely white too. They are always subtly uncomfy/patronizing around exceptions, and my right-wing friends totally aren't. Even the younger far lefties, after dabbling w/dating other races, end up with their own.

The stereotypes the media pushes are seriously total bullshit.

Ossoff lost the election by a larger margin than Hillary lost the election in that same district. Trump won the district by 1 point.
Unsurprising, since for 2016 individual representatives outperformed Trump in most districts. Yet you're missing the bigger picture.
>The margin for this election is around 5 points
You don't measure the returns of congressional races by the presidential returns, you measure them by the last congressional race, in which Tom Price won with a 23pt cushion. That race, even, with Trump on the ticket was tighter than the district usually produces.
>If Democrats are really trying to take this loss as some sort of victory
The smart ones will see it that way; /pol/'s habit is to seek out the salt of the dumb ones, and relish in their misery, not remembering the short a time ago when the shoe was on the other foot. Power changes hands under our system
>they'll just blow away their money again in 2018 and you'll be bitching about how their losses in 2018 means Trump is doomed for 2020.
Given that you in all likelihood took all your lessons from the wrong places, it should come as a surprise for you to learn that Trump really oughtn't have won the last election, even against so bad a candidate as Hillary.

I just do not understand how these idiots imagine that supporting the minimum wage is any bit moral. the last election, the democratic candidate spent less than $1000. So it is not that a 23 point victory became a 4 point victory. The dems thought, maybe Trump will change things, maybe they could spend money and gain traction. They tested the water. And it was cold. Trump invaded and took blue areas from democratics and so far the democrats are unable to win anything outside their territory. There is no good news for dems. They are relegated to coastal US, and no power in congress or the senate or the presidency. The autopsy will begin. They will change their platform.

-There is no bigger picture besides the fact that the narrative that Trump or Republicans are losing enough ground to be blown out in 2018 is a flat out lie.

-You don't try to equivocate a race in which an incumbent runs basically unchallenged to a race that was given national media attention with money pouring in for both candidates. Tom Price won handily while facing little opposition and the Dems didn't put much of a fight into that race. In fact, because of Hillary sucking the DNC money for her national campaign over the lower-level races (because they thought the down-ticket effects of Trump would be sufficient), the Democrats had little resources for a lot of races making some margins larger than normal especially in red states like Georgia. Price having little opposition and facing very little opponent money are the reasons for his margin. This race had media attention and Ossoff outspending his opponent by a factor of 5. A 5 point defeat coming out of that extra attention and effort is a pretty embarrassing defeat with resources wasted.

-No the smart donors will learn their return on investment is fucking nothing considering they outspent the Republicans 5 to 1 and got a solid defeat to show for it. Couple that with the fact that Republicans always have the demographic advantage in midterm elections and smart Democrat donors know they are fucked.

-And I enjoy your bitching about how Trump shouldn't have won when you seem to forget that all of the MSM was claiming how Democrats had innate demographic advantages making Hillary have a "90%" chance of winning. Go back and read some of the old articles from the MSM talking about how the electoral college was deadset for a Democratic victory. They were very wrong as your shilling ass is.

This one matters because trump barely won there. He only won by 1.5% I think. So this is a test to see if the dial has moved. It's a bit confusing because she won by 5%. So it shows that Trump is probably still very strong. Also it is a highly educated district, so the hope that the educated voter will abandon the republicans seems to have fallen flat. It's just a good example of what the dems will and won't be able to flip in 2018. Doesn't look too good for them.

>the last election, the democratic candidate spent less than $1000. So it is not that a 23 point victory became a 4 point victory.
In a vacuum, the Dems could go from $1000 to $100mil and still not expect to win a district as this one. All that extra advertising a $100mil could buy would do is to annoy Republican voters.

>The dems thought, maybe Trump will change things, maybe they could spend money and gain traction. They tested the water. And it was cold.
Cold would be perhaps a 5-10pt movement in a race like this, for which the respective attitudes of the crowers and the hand-wringers might be appropriate.

>Trump invaded and took blue areas from democratics
The converse is that Trump will need to justify his policies in those precincts he flipped when he's next on the ticket, from working-class, rust-belt states. Voters are going to want an economic return for their votes.

>and so far the democrats are unable to win anything outside their territory.
Don't fall to a memeish understanding of these special elections. These seats aren't merely outside the D's territory, their well outside of them. When choosing who take into a new administration, one important considerations is how those seats will fare. Trump chose from safe seats to provide for a large cushion to any strong challenge. These races aren't a simple 1to1 reflections of current job performance, they came with a built-in advantage.

>There is no good news for dems. They are relegated to coastal US, and no power in congress or the senate or the presidency. The autopsy will begin. They will change their platform.
Every other cycle partisans of one party or another declares that of their opponents to be DOA, or reduced to a regional party. These are the self-serving words of the system's ego, fed by partisan hyperbole. Yet for as many times as it's predicted, it never turns out that way. The system self corrects, even having no great platform modification.

>-There is no bigger picture besides the fact that the narrative that Trump or Republicans are losing enough ground to be blown out in 2018 is a flat out lie.
To show how little is known of politics by the jokers around here, the big picture is that elections are the entry level (which most get wrong anyway), and Republicans are discussing amongst themselves how to best implement their approved roadmap for socialized healthcare.
>SHUT UP WE'RE WINNING
Sure we are. Sure we are.

>You don't try to equivocate a race in which an incumbent runs basically unchallenged to a race that was given national media attention with money pouring in for both candidates. Tom Price won handily...are the reasons for his margin
Simple fact that you and your type wants to have ignored is that Price's district is a gerrymandered stronghold. The typical returns don't reflect spending, they reflect enthusiasm, for races in them otherwise go along the rails to an expected conclusion. With the Democrats pushing uphill all the way, this was converted into a three point spread. Fuck you and your head-in-the-sand, laurels-resting obliviousness.

>No the smart donors will learn their return on investment is fucking nothing considering they outspent the Republicans 5 to 1 and got a solid defeat to show for it.
I've written how the smart donors will take this about three different ways, and why; they're going to literally pour money into the system in 2018, to levels some voters will take as obscene (but don't worry; there will be enough spent on the R side to make any crying foul into hypocrites). And here's the thing: YOU DENYING THIS ON A FUCKING IMAGE BOARD IS NOT GOING TO CHANGE HOW THEY ACT. So there's no political benefit to stand by a narrative here so to be seen chest thumping for Trump, or the GOP or whatever. That's just you acting out on your political correctness. You have a story, and are bound to it, no matter the facts. But this is a discussion board, and I'll continue to speak above your "right"ist PCism. So just maybe you'll want to discuss from that basis.

Nah.

>when you seem to forget that all of the MSM was claiming how Democrats had innate demographic advantages making Hillary have a "90%" chance of winning
Much of what the MSM has to say to fill a 24hr news cycle and slip content next to ad links is forgettable, and should promptly be forgotten by any who do not want a tree-level view of politics when they should strive for a forest-level one. What's not forgettable is that Trump owes his win to edging out Clinton in a handful of states by percentages that aren't out of line with pre-election polling expected margins of error.

>Couple that with the fact that Republicans always have the demographic advantage in midterm elections and smart Democrat donors know they are fucked.
A margin of safety that has been eroding in off-year elections.

-And I enjoy your bitching
I positively hate being in political alliance with the stupid party and its retarded flunkies.

Repeal of the 17th Amendment.

Senate races are majority financed from without a state and makes Senators creatures of the party which supports then, or makes them owing to out-of-state financiers, rather than true representatives of the state. Having Senators subject to a statewide popular vote is a triplicative way to express the same want for representation, when one statewide popular vote would do. Better that they should be appointed, as before, making elections of Governors far more important, and imbuing that office with more authority. Tie Senators to the Governors and shift loyalties almost by default to local concerns, which in breaking them from a Washington-based caucus may return circumspection to the Senate, conceived to be the brake on congressional action (direct representation eroded this original safeguard). This fits to a desired philosophical approach; the very existence of a statewide caucus to represent in the federal system detracts from an orientation to be biased in favor of the locality--the town to which your taxes go, and its environs--as a small-R republican should hold. By our current system, we turn the heads of all our citizens away from state capitals towards Washington, that they may track the careers of all those the people voted for. They voted for a President, a Representative, two whole Senators, but just one lonely Governor. Fuck if they care about the local school board, where all the communists know to go tighten their grip on education.

Increasingly we're less of a republic, and more a singular state, finding federal solutions to impose on a people far apart from each other in both culture and proximity. It's not by accident that we got this way.
