people think that hardship builds character so the more hardship you've endured, the more character you have. to a point I agree, although too much hardship will break a person and make them useless.

and since we live in the modern west, it's accurate to say that the things we put ourselves through in order to achieve our own goals, such as work or hobbies, can't compare to the hardship some people go through involuntarily.

so the only ones who can know what true, serious things are, must be the ones who've involuntarily been subjected to hardship. so in order to seem that we are those people ourselves, we make stories about hardships and exaggerate.
