In the UK we're generally socially less disaproving of homosexuality than the US. Homosexuality in the UK is about 1.7%. In the US there are more homophobes yet 3.8% are gay. Neither countries legislate against it.

I don't think social attitudes have much effect on whether people end up becoming gay or not. Like giving gay people angry stares across the street or protesting gay pride won't do shit. I've visited quite a few Islamic countries and despite being under the threat of imprisonment or even public whipping you still bump into gays (typically more open to Westerners so reveal there gayness). Gays in the closet won't have children anyway.

I could be wrong though and it would be hard to prove statistically because the gays in oppresive countries may not reveal it. If I remember correctly what the literature says about actual enviromental factors increasing chance of homosexuality they are stuff like: getting fiddled as a kid, getting abused, being last born siblings, having low T, having older sisters, having a gay dad etc. Which we can't really change via societal pressure anyway.

I think homosexuality is nearly completely normalised in the UK, it's not a big deal anymore. And the media rarely talks about gay rights anymore because they already have them, there is no real issues surrounding them anymore. Apart from the safe sex issue which is an intercommunity issue and slowly being resolved with education. I don't think it's gonna completely ramp up like you imagine where you wake up to the sound of gay sex because the government has forced you to use a LGBT approved alarm clock and you have to shove a dildo up your ass twice a day to walk in a gay guys shoes.
