There is no excuse for this. It's also the second major USN warship taken out this year via collision. Incompetence, plain and simple, in both cases.

you're all stupid. collisions are not a consideration in modern navies. modern warships are not built to be collided with. Modern vessels are easily destroyed by enemy missiles/torpedoes from miles away. They wouldn't make warships that are super sturdy, since it doesn't matter when a cruise missile hits the hull.

modern warships are a floating series of missiles and missile countermeasures. two rival navies' ships will never collide like this, so it's not a design consideration.

it's not surprising that a billion dollar ship was damaged when a regular transport vessel bumped into it. fuck off military illiterates

Funny thing is, navy ships have a massive amount of procedures and protocols to ensure that no other ship gets within even a moderate distance of them (unless they're in formation or similar circumstances). Just a ship getting close enough to see humans on can mean some people get transferred to desk jobs on land for the rest of their service. So if a container ship three times the size of the Navy vessel actually hit it and killed people, some fucking heads are gonna roll. It wouldn't surprise me if the entire command of that ship and everyone who was on deck just lost any chance of a career.

It's not surprising, that is exactly what is going to happen. Def some leadership outside of the ship as well.

This is a huge embarrassment to the Navy, the loss of combat power for the 7th fleet and more importantly, the loss of life. Asses are going to the fire.

You've never had an international package, apparently. Customs is random no matter where you are or what you buy. Sometimes shit passes through instantly, sometimes it sits in a fucking bin forever because they have absolutely no reason or motivation to move your shit. It's even worse if you live in some shitskin nation where customs has a 50/50 chance of swiping your shit for themselves because they can.
And trust me, customs doesn't give a fuck about kawaii loli figures here in the US. I've had those pass through instantly. The worst customs wait I've ever had was for a Super Famicom cart of Rockman X2. It sat in NYC for a month, then got stuck in a nearby sort center for another two weeks. The actual time on the boat was only a week.

>How in the worldwide world of sports did 7 people die from that

look at the profile of the container ship hulls in the diagram in his thread, they have a huge protrusion below the waterline.
The real major damage was done by the submerged tip of the cargo ship's hull ramming through the destroyer's hull below the waterline like a giant can opener
that's where the drowning came in, the ship supposedly almost sank immediately after the impact

if it was 1945 there would probably be a torpedo belt there but they don't build ships to take hits anymore

Let's put aside the fact of the damage for a second.

This is a US military vessel relatively near the South China sea, with all the political volatility that implies. Were they just not paying attention? How did they not see 70,000 of ship and cargo coming at them? This is the US military, famed for cutting-edge hardware, and they didn't have some sort of radar collision detection system? They didn't even have some lad on deck like the Titanic to say "here lads, there's a big floaty thing of some sort coming, we should move"? I don't understand this accident at all.

----

This is the transcript of a radio conversation of a US naval ship with Canadian authorities off the coast of Newfoundland in October, 1995.
Radio conversation released by the Chief of Naval Operations 10-10-95.

Americans: Please divert your course 15 degrees to the North to avoid a Collision.

Canadians: Recommend you divert YOUR course 15 degrees to the South to avoid a collision.

Americans: This is the Captain of a US Navy ship. I say again, divert YOUR course.

Canadians: No. I say again, you divert YOUR course.

Americans: This is the aircraft carrier USS Lincoln, the second largest ship in the United States' Atlantic fleet. We are accompanied by three destroyers, three cruisers and numerous support vessels. I demand that YOU change your course 15 degrees north, that's one five degrees north, or countermeasures will be undertaken to ensure the safety of this ship.

Canadians: This is a lighthouse. Your call.

You have form for this and whenever you come out second best it's someone else's fault. HMS Shitpost, made by drunks in Northern England and crewed by drunks from Southern Australia, literally cut one of yours in half. Now you've had a ship destroyed by a cargo ship carrying some anime and whores.

US Navy is the most powerful Navy in the world unless you're an Israeli pilot, a third world sailor, a terrorist on a jetski or a WW2 British carrier.

The American shipbuilding industry is a joke.
Trump should hire Tsuneishi to oversee the US shipyards in Philly, and then share designs with the Japanese gov't.

Tsuneishi has successfully managed to build high quality ships, with Japanese equipment and makers lists, at their renowned shipyards in the Philippines and China. Alongside Kawasaki's two shipyards in China, they are the only non-Japanese ships considered almost equal to Japanese quality.

If they can manage the Chinese and Philippino slave workers, surely they can manage a few American rednecks.

And if Japanese yards can build a VLCC supertanker for ~80-90 million, there is no excuse why a tiny "warship" should cost 2 billion.

No, because navy destroyers don't fly to Mars, they float in the sea. So when you're considering the position of a navy destroyer relative to something else, you don't consider the distance to Mars, or even the land around or anything, you only look at the sea, because that's where ships go. This is called a "contextual constraint", it's where some things are relevant and others are not relevant so you only consider the relevant things. I'm trying to keep my words very small because I'm intuiting that English may not be your first language.

Even in dreadnought warfare you want to be angling your ship so all guns can bear on the target without showing a flat broadside for those big explosive armour piercing shells to punch through.
Broadsiding worked when ships were armed with 60 guns that fired balls which bounce off of wood. It doesn't work when one shell can nuke your boiler room.

It's not about radars idiot, they show you like 4 hours before that you are on collision course

My bet is on americans being fucking dumb amerifats
when the container ships asks you to alter your course 1 degree to port for 1 minute because the cargo steers way worse you do it just for that simple reason

If you are an ignorant shitlord u stay on your course, get rammed, kill 7 sailors but u are safe because naval regulations were on your side

>>
>>130386237

I can defend this, too.

Warships are built to protect it's vital Components from Cannon Fire, Missiles and Bombs - all of those have in common that they produce large Force over a very small Period of Time. But that's completely different from a physical Collision between two Ships, were forces effect the ship's structure for the whole duration of the Collision. Combine this with the fact that Warships nowadays are generally less heavy on armor and more reliant on speed and there is no surprise how it can be easily crippled by a ship ramming into it - especially if the incoming ship hits the sides, which are structurally weaker than the front or rear end.

Also keep in mind that Warships nowadays would not even get into collision range when there is an actual war situation.

Indeed. Cargo ships like that are designed to cut through the water as efficiently as possible too, to fuel reasons. This also makes it a bit more difficult to slow down on time.

USN fucked up sending the battleships from mothball to museum prematurely.
As inefficient as the hulls may be, and as expensive as another conversion may have been, it's hard to argue another Arleigh Burke is money better for the same cost. 17" of hardened steel below the belt is hard to argue with. Anyone care to look how many USN battleships have been sunk during and since WW2?
So many reasons the battleships weren't saved, but I have a hard time thinking it wouldn't have been worth it.
>>
>>130386237
>>130386420

I'm willing to bet that the helmsmen or whoever was in charge at the time for avoiding that other ship was a woman. Unfortunately whatever woman likely fucked this up will not be blamed because ultimately the Captain is responsible for his ship. Unless of course the Captain is a woman in which case God help us all.

It's a common problem in all 1st world western military. Women in places they have no business being. Women cannot even drive cars properly let alone pilot a billion dollar multi-ton ship.

Learn my ships...Thanks for calling me a faggot I feel like a proper squid now. Plenty of experience onboard them, as well as MM-OSM building and repairing, I would like to think I know a thing or two, with your permission. Hunting submarines, hmm, perhaps you don't know the difference between the definition of pre-1970's (submarine) destroyer and a post-1970's USN (guided missile) destroyer, i.e. Oliver Hazard Perry and Arleigh Burke? ASW is no longer the primary role of the destroyer, whatsoever.
