People stand watches on the ship, but before you stand a watch you have to get qualified. It's a series of tests to demonstrate your knowledge. If you fuck up while on watch you lose your qual and have to get retrained.

They sometimes conduct "man overboard drills" randomly while out to sea. Pretty much they pretend that someone fell overboard and they try to account for everyone as soon as possible. They want to make sure that everyone is onboard and safe in a timely manner. Well I guess they did a drill, and someone came up missing. What the fuck? Did he fall overboard? There's a sailor missing, and everyone needs to be accounted for. So the Japanese and Americans cruised around the ocean looking for this fucker, and eventually gave up thinking he was dead. Example of why: take a 2X4, suspend it vertically from one end and hit it about in the middle as hard as you can with a fire axe. Broomstick comes through unscathed, while the sturdier 2X4 gets wrekt.
