First time the bill was $0 because the health insurance plan was coming from a Jewniversity as a student.

Second time was on my own choice of private plan. In this case it was way more potentially serious. Total cost on paper was close to $10k even adding a series of optional followup tests to make sure I didn't have a crazy brain tumor or something. Out of pocket was about $800. So everything went pretty much as planned considering I had chosen a $1k deductable, wide coverage (I was out of state at the time, just the nearest hospital), and I'm down to pay for small stuff out of pocket as long as big stuff gets taken care off.

I pay about as much for it as car insurance. The US medical industry is absolutely a scam in need of reform (they're currently killing all three of my remaining grandparents as nicely as they can) but if you're young and reasonably well off it's good stuff.

When I was out of work I found a plan for about half of car insurance, but that was pretty skimpy. If anything really bad had happened I'd be wiped out.

On the other hand, I had a friend in college who got hit by a car and needed about $100k and a plate in his head and he had no way to pay for it, and his family couldn't help. He had to jump through some hoops, but he found a federal program to pretty much take care of it. The US absolutely has ways to help people who can't manage.

People don't get turned away from the hospital here, whether you got insurance or not, have money or not. State picks up the tab in these cases. Always has been this way. All this healthcare bullshit is semantics and smoke and mirrors. Only problem with our system was we could not have healthy competition across state lines.
