Welfare encourages bad decisions and bad lifestyles. After we added work requirements for welfare in the nineties, the "poverty" rates immediately went down, as it forced these deadbeats to get off the couch.

I much prefer Christian, monarchic methods of wealth redistribution. The Church should be responsible for the well-being of the poor. People should donate money to their local churches and those churches help the needy. Not just financial help, but also practical advice and spiritual guidance.
The welfare state is an impersonal, bureaucratic, inefficient monster. It's a burden.
