The captain is going to get dishonorably discharged, maybe face court martial.

What kind of dipfuck drives a destroyer in front of a cargo ship?

An Arleigh Burke is 100 times more maneuverable than any cargo ship.

This was definitely a "hold my beer" moment. Captain was probably thinking he'd show off and cut it close or something, fucked up badly.

Okay since nobody understands how navigation works

>Captain gives course and destination/barpat
>Junior Officers qualified as Deck Watch Officers actually spend time on the bridge along with the helmsman, Conning officer and at least one lookout
>Any changes in course or close proximity with another vessel get called down to the captain with suggested action
>Combat Information Center also has 24/7 watchstanders monitoring vessel activity

The fact that they even let a vessel get this close means they weren't even paying attention

Surely the oow didn't blindly allow the ship to run a straight course into the path of a fucking cargo vessel?

Was it a manoeuvre into its path? Do US naval vessels have the same procedures as us?

When a manoeuvre is ordered on our warships, there is a "check quarters" command given and 2 crew members physically eyeball out of both bridge wings, mainly for tradition but also to confirm radar info before making any course changes.

>Doesn't make sense how????
Morons still manage to get hit by trains all the time.

Think about that for a bit. Most people will not walk or drive into a train moving in front of them. So they almost always get hit head on.

A path that's lets say 3 m wide, which can be cleared in maybe 1s in a car or 2s on foot.

So they have a 3 meter wide danger zone that can be cleared in at most 2s.

~

As for a ship getting hit, every officer on watch and that captain should be removed from command and given a full review and if found to be of merit retraining and can start over a few ranks down.

"As the father of two teenagers, I found this book invaluable. I’m sure other parents here can empathize when I say I shudder at the thought of the increasing presence of huge ships in the lives of my children. I certainly remember the strain I caused so long ago for my own parents when I began experimenting with huge ships. The long inter-continental voyages that kept my mom and dad up all night with worry. Don’t even get me started on the international protocols when transporting perishable cargo. To think, I was even younger than my kids are now! huge ships are everywhere and it doesn’t help that the tv and movies make huge ships seem glamorous and cool. This book helped me really approach the subject of huge ships with my kids in an honest and non judgmental way. Because of the insights this book provided, I can sleep a little better and cope with the reality that I can’t always be there to protect my kids from huge ships, especially as they become adults. I’m confident that my teens, when confronted by a huge ship, are much better prepared to make wiser decisions than I did. At the very least my children certainly know that they can always come to me if they have any concerns, questions or just need my support when it comes to the topic of huge ships.”

You boys clearly don't understand shit.
Have you heard the saying "it takes a mile to stop a train" ?

Now scale that up to a boat.
Now there's 2 boats.
And each one causes a displacement of water around it.
That water sucks in anything that gets too close.

Two boats, can't stop, get too close, get pulled into one another.

That's why boat don't sail close together the way cars can drive next to each other.

Under the regulations of the sea both ships must do all that they can to avoid collisions. There is no such thing as a "right of way"

the US Navy commanders are fucked. But the cargo ship is also at fault. When ships collide both are deemed at fault unless one ship had made a immediate change of course just prior to the collision, which has not been established.
