Honestly there are different types of test for intelligence. IQ is probably the most generalized.
It just determines how quickly you can associate patterns or solve problems.
Say there is a picture with 4 squares and each square has x or y amount of dots. You now choose the fifth square that has z amount of dots.
That's not the only measure of intelligence though.
There are cognitive test, where you are given a certain amount of items and told to solve the puzzle.

I think one was a hammer, a nail, a board, and your goal is to get the apple off the tree.
So you use the hammer to nail the "nail" into the board, than use the board to hook the apple with the nail, and pull down.

You can measure different senses and judge intelligence based off this also.
A child for instance can solve this puzzle within a few minutes by trial and error.

They get incredibly complex though, eventually leading to using gears to make watches, etc.

Trial and error is just as much a part of intelligence as the autistic "i'm so smart look at my equations", because someone has to engineer the items together.
Einstein did not build the fusion reactor, he just helped create the theory of how it will work.

I'm not sure exactly what the test entails. You're right of course, but I was giving an example. That's all those test do, is give you random items and you need to solve the problem. There is no right answer, only more efficient answers. Based off how quickly and how efficient (less items) you used to solve the problem. Your practical skill intelligence can be judged.
This is extremely noticeable in moving mechanics, where the math wiz who can do string theory suddenly has no idea how to make the machine function, but the guy who doesn't know math, just understand how things works, gets it working in maybe an hour.
