They said that's good just get home safe and don't bother anyone - I was then on my way to walk home.

What police do can best be described as "selective interpretation / execution of the law". This means that if they decide to fuck you over because they don't like you or they feel like it then they pretty much can.

The only thing that stops them is a cop further up the food chain who either wishes to keep a certain amount of peace in his community or alternately is incentivised to keep a certain amount of peace in his community.

Most of that is down to luck.
