It's been commented before that leftists and liberals tend to be masochistic to some extent. They aren't interested in winning elections so much as they're interested in being "right." They would rather win moral victories than actual victories. These personality flaws are punctuated by a party that is incredibly diverse and thus relies on unity in order to prevail at the ballot box. Unfortunately there's something in our culture that makes disunity, professional victimhood, and general grievance commercially successful. There are many individuals in our media, many Democrats, who have discovered that it's profitable to fan the flames of disunity even at the cost of winning elections.

It's an odd mix of hilarity and pathetic sadness.
