Normally, these dynamics are controlled by the rate of interest. In ancient times when society had comparatively little capital stored up, interest rates were anywhere from 20% to 100% per anum or more. The rates were so high because an economy will protect itself from drawing on its savings to an unsafe degree. High interest rates make it so nobody's wiling to invest in stupid things like Juicero or The Emoji Movie. Rather they invest in farming and other more essential needs.
As we accumulated savings, interest rates have dropped accordingly in order to let society draw more out of its savings.
Interest rates are now low enough that it's profitable to invest in video games and other leisure.
As we save up more and more, the rate of interest will approach, but never reach zero, or infinite prosperity.

The problem is that real interest is artificially low, which makes us buy more leisure than is necessary. In fact, real rates are BELOW zero thanks to inflation.

This means that the economy is consuming more than it creates. Artificially low interest is the cause of consumerism and so-called "late stage capitalism."
The reason governments do this is because when people are buying and consuming more, the government gets more tax money. It's a total disaster.

The inherent problem with Utopias is that it basically turns everyone into a super rich kid. Imagine having effectively infinite money with no need to do anything other than party all day and do drugs all night. Sure you could create things but why bother when there's so much shit to do and new toys to play with? How many kids of millionaires do you know that actually go out and make stuff? The future is just going to be like Roman Empire at the the height of its hedonism, without a care in the world and culturally stagnant. And since the wealth isn't going to be equally distributed across the planet, the have not nations will start to see the utopia's riches as a quick source of cash. Its going to be a repeat of the sacking of Rome, with the exact same barbarians smashing through the gates envious of the wealth within.

I worry that this is what will happen if the robots take over all the manufacturing jobs and everyone gets placed on universal basic income.
