the burden of having needlessly taken a life drives even strong men insane. it has been instilled by tens of thousands of years of evolution. the killers mind requires significant rationalization to come to terms.
have you ever known a killer? really gotten to know one? it doesn't have to be some criminal. maybe a long-time infantryman or special forces soldier? the act of killing without sufficient justification breaks something at the basic level of cognition. only madness or endlessly repeated lies can save them.
that's why we ritualize the act. we tell the executioner he was serving society and carrying out justice. we give soldiers rules of engagement so they can tell themselves, "i was following the rules" after gunning down savages. psychopaths come up with elaborate self-imposed rules and rationalizations for themselves.
