If they were going to buy the jets then they were going to buy them, either from the US or someone else. By maintaining the financial relationship with them it could make it easier to bring them more inline and if nothing else the US gets a tidy profit off of it from the sale.

So theoretically there's no real benefit to reject the deal, whereas there's at least a small potential benefit for accepting it.

It does sound stupid at first blush though, and it's questionable if Qatar cares at all either way.

A big part of Trump's campaigning was talking about how many loopholes and exceptions are available to the ultra-rich that allow them to pay a far lower rate of income tax than people in theoretically lower income brackets. He talked about these things and stated that, while he himself took advantage of those loopholes, he wanted to eliminate them while simultaneously reducing the tax rate to bring in more money overall for the american taxpayer, and make the system more fair and balanced.

As a business man it would be stupid for him to pay more tax than he needed to pay. Though it's perfectly reasonable for him to look at his tax rate and empathize with people who make less and pay more on the dollar, and want to get into politics to change that.

Also, if you want to say anyone is logically inconsistent when it comes to taxes, feel free to look at socialists like Bernie Sanders. The dude literally paid less income tax than Trump and still advocates for above 50% tax rates for the rich.
