It's weird - you'd think that southerners would be more aware of this kind of stuff, and be more wary of race-mixing... but you see it all over the place nowadays down there.
Apparently this grandma was the "primary caretaker" for this guy for a while because the dad wasn't involved and the mom was a fuckup of some sort. What a surprise...
