my sides. m8 they will never let you step foot on the same continent as an armed enemy. forget that shit. if you like doing repetitive bullshit handling drills and getting yelled at by 45 year old fat chicks with big asses and LARPing all while getting laughed at by real soldiers, go ahead. oh and dont forget that almost all of your section commanders and platoon sergeants are pogues and penpushers who were dumped in those units because theyre on stress leave or because theyre incompetent. everything youll get taught will be backwards and the spastic way of doing things. it is actually harder to train a former reservist than it is to train a civilian because of the garbage their heads get filled with in choc units. army is either all in or fuck off. you will never get what you want by dipping your toes in the water. gotta jump in pal. even then, do not recommend. australian army will not deploy for another decade, that shits all over and thats why i got out.

take my advice and take it well. do NOT join an infantry unit in the army reserves. reservist infantry are more danger to themselves than to any enemy, and thats how the organisation as a whole treats them. theyre a quiet embarrassment that is swept under the rug. do something technical if youre going to be a reservist. you can always transfer in later, but you have a very hard time transferring out. promise you wont do it anon. dont get sucked in by the recruiters, they have quotas to fill (and cash bonuses if they fill them) and they will tell you whatever you want to hear. dont listen to them. reserves literally practice with broomsticks sometimes. oh yeah and the budget has just been cut massively so you will probably go to the firing range and lick off about 30 shots in a single year, if at all. reserves only live fire about one day a year and its super restricted and super gay. dont ignore what im telling you, you will regret it bigly.

as for if you could live off reserve pay alone, no, not anymore. recruiters will tell you otherwise, but its not true. they restrict the amount of days now, used to be you could show up as often as you liked but they cut that a long time ago to i think maximum 1 day/week (apart from 2 weeks in the bush once/year). thats not a lot of cash.
