The AR files from closed bolt (as is AK) but has a nice dust cover and a lot less gaps that allow grit, mud, sticks, stones to enter the action.
The bolt forms a tighter seal around the ejection port further tightening down the entry point for excess materials.
The AR also vents gas out of the ejection port, which on the initial shot, usually blasts away any material clinging to it.
whereas on the AR the bolt is more likely to open, allowing that stuff in, then as it slams shut dragging it into the bolt causing more hangups.

It's very simple technical differences.

the one area the AK would do better, is quick field disassembly and cleaning.

dust cover off, brush it out, water it out whatever, back on, ready to go.

the AR requires more time to clean and it's a bit trickier.
but it's design inherently prevents most situations where you'd need a quick field strip.

M16/AR15 was designed with different powder in mind, one that caused less fouling. The gun was supposed to be sent back to manufacturer for cleaning by civvies, but even this was supposed to be very rare

US Military used their surplus WW2 powder, which:

The third problem introduced lots of problems of strictly mechanical nature. By the time the bullet reached gas port, the pressure inside of barrel(and consequently - gas port) was higher than intended which caused the rifle to cycle faster and more violently than it should which:

>caused problems with the bolt "bouncing" off before locking, which usually meant failure to get into battery in a way that didn't cause explosion because firing pin couldn't reach the primer(it was fixed by using different buffer spring)

The biggest, most retarded thing they've done, was buying the rifles without cleaning kits - they've had super, new extra modern R&D going that would give them their .30 caliber rifle that wasn't dogshit like M14 and M16 were treated as stop-gap measures. As such, soldiers didn't clean their rifles AT ALL.

There were also problems with lower receiver being weak etc. but this was fixed by forging it in a little bit different way.

All of those problems were fixed by the time M16 was called M16A1.

AK isn't as environmental proof as people think. It does better when submerged in water, but mud will cause a lot of problems(it's very "open" action, so debris gets into it easy)

The thing about AK is that you need close to no training to use it. When it jams you do 3 things and it starts working again, no matter what happened. With AR15 there's more to it, much more. It's also doing better in jungle environment where you don't always see your enemy, so you just spray and pray because it fires heavier bullet with better structural penetration and(cont)

the real question is why would any self respecting person not have one of each rifle? Then you can use 762 and 556 it doesn't cost that much to get one of each rifle. (AR-15 these days not a m-16.)
