They produce electricity the same way as any fission reactor - by heating a cooling liquid, which may be water or anything else that can be heated up. That heated liquid then is used to power generators, either because it is used to heat up water through heat exchangers or directly.

Wendelstein X-7 is one of the core reasons why the rest of the would tries to kill Germany once again. Rest of the world can't have it, that Germany has its own source of energy that isn't oil or gas.
Think years ahead and we might see small fusion reactors in every household or flying car.

A working fusion reactor is a really big leap for mankind and would potentially ruin entire nations who base their wealth or currency on oil.

We've got to stop pussyfooting around and hoping we can sink all our effort into ONE thing that will somehow solve everything. We need to look at seriously overhauling EVERY alternative to conventional fossil fuels. That means more wind and solar, but it also means more alternative natural gasses, more geothermal, updating existing hydroelectric facilities, and definitely more uranium fission. More optimistic alternatives like nuclear fusion or thorium-based fission may be possible some day, but we need to create an energy plan based on what we've got available now, not what might be available 50 years from now.

Dealing with material degradation from fast neutron flux is one of the challenges of fusion reactor design. Our current attempts have basically been limited to "armor the fuck out of the containment vessel sufficiently so it can operate it's entire lifetime without needing replacement"
