The main issues regarding a nordic political union are Denmark and Norways NATO-membership and believe it or not the monarchies in our countries. There has been some serious debate about the question but our divided engagement in other political projects are a big problem.

The main catalyst for a potential nordic union would be a heavily reformed NATO if not cancelled.

Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Norway (besides language) are more or less identical societies and cultures with some regional quirks. Denmark naturally being more influenced by mainland Europe and Finland by Russia, but in its essence we are the same.

I have travelled extensively in the nordics as well as being a citizen in three of our countries (lol) and if you removed language, most nordic people would have issues localizing themself given societal function and culture if you dropped them off in an unknown location.

Nordic similarites are stronger than between different american states in my experience. I am 100% cultural compatible with any dane, norwegian or finn which is remarkable if you compare it to other nations. There is literally no friction, mostly because of shared genetics or in the case of Finland history.

EU law has precedent over national law. Over 50% of new legislation going in effect in Sweden is drafted in Brussels, not our national parliament. This is the same in every EU country.

Regarding Finland. Finland are banned from trading with a neighbour they share an over 1000km long border with. Finlands export industry is in rubbles and unemployment has skyrocketed together with a tanking economy.

Finland being in economic trouble is a direct result from them being unable to trade with their biggest trading partner for hundreds of years. They are banned from this because of the geopolitical chess game between US/EU and Russia. A game where Finland is not actually involved and should not be either.

That's been my sense just watching from afar in my obesity scooter, which is why to me that core set of countries seems like it would result in a stable union of sufficient economic size to be enough of a world player. It could perhaps even be enough of a center of gravity to attach one or more Baltics to it, since they're so small they pretty much need to be in some collective or other.

I honestly don't get why Swedish is still an official language in Finland to this day, at least on the mainland. Why can't they just learn Finnish? We have more people with Finnish background in Sweden than you have Fennoswedes, and while Finnish/Miänkieli are "official languages" in Sweden, they obviously don't have the same status as Swedish in Finland. Swedish is obviously an important part of Finnish history, but maintaining Swedish as an official language seems like a burden on society which undermines Finnish sovereignty. The only reasonable solution is that Swedish is dropped as an official language, and Fennoswedes are given Swedish citizenships if they'd rather live in a Swedish speaking country than learn Finnish.

It's unacceptable that someone lives in your country without learning the language, let alone being a citizen or being born there. Not even in Sweden do we let immigrants avoid learning Swedish, and while 2nd generation immigrants often have shitty, suburban "dialects", there are no 2nd generation immigrants in Sweden who can't speak Swedish.

I just don't get the motive for letting them avoid learning the language. Is it just to be nice? Do they really have such influence?
