Muslim laws were that the religious groups were to remain segregated. According to Maliki jurisprudence, Muslim men could take Christian wives, but Christian men could not take Muslim wives. Eventually, the Christians took complete control. They told the Muslims to leave, convert or die. Most of them fled the country, some converted. They were called Mouriscos and repressed, resulting in most of them also leaving the country.

It was the Reconquista that saved Hispania from Islam.
