It also raises collective social consciousness and makes members of the society care greatly for the wellbeing of the community. Capitalism as a predominant system started in city-states in Europe in the 16th century, and spread out over the world. Not quickly either, I mean, the UK is still legally ruled by a queen.

Serious revolutions against it began erupting with the Paris commune in 1871. In the early-mid 20th century, American and European intellectuals were asking if capitalism was over as a system. The Russian nomenklatura deciding to dissolve their system put those thoughts out of mind for a time, but the 2008 great recession, Greek and Spanish economic collapses etc. keep the question in mind.
