I have done all three.

AncestryDNA is for ancestry research purposes only. They will give you a basic ethnic background review, but the really big thing with them is relative matching. They have the largest pool of potential matches by far, so you are more likely to hit pay dirt there. AncestryDNA does NOT have a chromosome browser though. Your matches are just basic information and it is up to you to figure out where the match might lie in terms of DNA address. 23&me and FTDNA are smaller, but have chromosome browsers. Doing tests with them allows you to triangulate matches and probe your deeper ancestry. They both do ethnicity too, but only 23&me allows for ethnicity matching with physical DNA addresses. This is important as one segment may be say, white while another could be native american or whatever. Your matches in those areas will share the same racial background as you. 23&me gives basic Y and mt DNA info, but it is the dummy lights version. Only FTDNA has the separate Y and mt tests that go deep and tell you what teams you belong to.

It all depends on what you are looking for. If you just want to find out what you are, pick any. They are all the same. If you want to stop being amateur and go pro, I would say AncestryDNA and FTDNA with an upload to Gedmatch, which gives you tools to start probing deep.
