I think the purpose of Comey's testimony was simply to get a credible person's statements under oath that the president is a liar and unscrupulous.
and the purpose of that is for this trial coming up in the fall that the media doesn't talk about.

That was for the same purpose, to get documentation of an accusation of bullying and coercion.
Comey admitted he leaked his memo to force the hand of the DOJ to appoing a special counsel. He did this after being fired.
So if this is all a means to one end where it doesn't matter how it gets done, I think they are taking every chance along the way to add another plank onto the pyre that this upcoming trial will try to ignite.
