God that had to have been the greatest day ever. I remember going into IRC and trying to engage the mod and get an explanation, ANY explanation, of the decision or what was actually part of the thread ban. I never got a straight answer from the mod himself, just a bunch of giggling from hangers-on in the IRC clearly thinking that idling in that channel would eventually lead to becoming a janitor or mod or something.

Seeing that guy torch himself—and he did do it to himself—was fucking glorious. I remember the post-firing /qa/ thread where he kept arguing that the manager's explanation was deceptive and unfair. It was a great day for free speech.

It was honestly always about the safety for me.
I used to go to a lot of places just like the ghost ship and even at the time I was kind of worried when basic safety questions like "what do we do if there's a fire?" just couldn't be answered by anyone planning the event. Hundreds of heavily intoxicated people would go into a rickety dark, unventilated, poorly wired basement or warehouse space and plug in tons of high wattage sound gear into extension cords and powerstrips. There are no clearly marked exits and lots of potentially flammable decorations are scattered about. A large fire at any of the hundreds of these events I attended would have killed dozens of people.
If these events were put on by a large public company they would get accused of being profit hungry monsters for risking their patrons lives to cut costs and everyone would be rightly appalled. The problem is that scumbag lefty venue owners like ghostship guy think they're cool underground rebels or gangsters or some edgy bullshit for operating deathtraps like that under the radar. Getting people to report these actual public safety hazards was genuinely wonderful thing and I believe we did save lives.
