Australian government are whoring us out of so much money when it comes to car ownership.

>obtaining any sort of license is becoming expensive as fuck
>registration for a car is common to be $500+ annually
>driving offences are insanely expensive
>tolls everywhere when were told our rego pays for the development and maintenance of the roads
>33% luxury car tax in a country that has stopped all car production
>police revenue raise to catch out hard working australians who are commuting to/from work in low accident areas to catch heavy footed drivers

Australia has a fucken tax for everything and we just cop it up the ass.

Rego $1,000 (including green slip, I think) and comp insurance around another $1,000. FML but I made my choices.

My motorbike, however, costs next to nothing to have regoed, keep running and insured. Still, not as cheap as the UK where rego cost something like £10 for my bike there.

Excessive speed is defined as driving 25 kilometres an hour or more above the speed limit, or at 130 kilometres an hour or more (if the speed limit is 110 kilometres per hour).
- 3825 / 310,708 * 100 = 1.231%
- Only 1.231% of motorists fined were fined for excessive speeds

- 301 / 310,708 * 100 = 0.0969%
- Only 0.0969% of motorists fined exceeded speed by 45km/h or more.

- 239,501 / 310,708 * 100 = 77.082%
- 77.082% of motorists fined were fined for speeding by less than 10km/h
Notice how the hoon laws are not actually catching hoons? They're targeting people speeding under 10 over.

And enabling massive police corruption.

Standard car rego in Victoria is now 800 fucking bucks a year!
Fines for basic not dangerous shit is 350 dollars (eg, pushing the speaker button on a phone *whilst stopped at a red light*).
Parking tickets are 100 ish and finding parking spots for more than an hour or two is really hard, so accidentally leaving it 20 minutes too long and getting a ticket is pretty easy.
Victoria..the place to be fined.

Here in QLD you need a car license before you can get a motorbike license, which is fucked because someone on a motorbike is less dangerous to others than a car

Why the fuck do you need a fucking V8 if by the time you hit 100 the next traffic light is already red.

>>128572281
In QLD the retards made limits on the amount of cylinders your car could have, the idea being "more cylinders = faster car". Anyone who isn't a fuckwit knows it doesn't work that way, and power/weight ratio is the way to determine a car's straight line speed. They realised their mistake, but didn't admit to it, keeping the restrictions on cylinders for cars prior to 2010, but introducing p/w ratio restrictions for cars after 2010.

Drive in fear half the time because of the cameras and hiding cops. Work in Westfield shopping centre so have to pay for parking if I'm not working a night shift. Only really have a car to get to work because the buses there come like 4 times a day and take half an hour to travel 4km down the road.

It's probably the same everywhere but the working poor really get fucked here. It's a good country but everyone thinks it's better than it really is. There is so much bullshit with cost of living.

I don't think people ITT understand how fucking far away everything is in Australia. Australian cities are spread out as fuck and unless you live and work in the CBD public transport or bicycles are completely nonviable, you're looking at a 1 hour commute for a 15 minute drive.

It's because Australians are brainwashed statists who are happy being cucked by their government

Also our govt dont teach us economics and so we think free shit comes from the sky

It is, and it's part of the reason you pay so much for everything. If you were a reasonable country then GM would still be making cars there, I'd feel bad for you but you fuckwits love to brag about how progressive you are with your high minimum wage compared to us stupid yanks.

Fucking insurances are a bunch of jews. Also fuck this commie state, with their high taxation. Here in Spain commies just want us to use exclusively public transport to have us controlled, and they want the population to be totally dependent of public transport so they can shut it down when they don't want people moving. I'm just gonna buy a motorcycle since at least they are fun and you don't need to pay 6 gorillions of euros of taxes.

So a motorcycle, a sportscar, and a truck towing a heavy trailer are equally dangerous when all three are doing the same speed? Speed limits are too low here anyway, the safety director for Mercedes says our limits could be raised to 130-160 on highways without significant increase in danger.

You didn't answer my question. Why should different vehicles have the same speed limit when their braking distance is different? Time is very valuable. Define "reasonable speed"

Where? There aren't many in Australia, partly because dumb cunts complain about the noise. Speed limits are an issue, they are too low compared to the rest of the world. An increase in limits would not cause a significant increase in danger. Australians have a need, and maybe a right, to timely travel, especially considering the size of the country. Someone speeding on a deserted road with noone to hurt except themselves is not morally wrong
>>
>>128590277
speed limits could be bumped up no doubt but by the looks of the pic you posted you're obviously a petrol head and let's be honest petrol heads urges should only be satisfied on tracks.
>>
>>128565527

Driving is a privilege that is abused by the majority.

In a sensible world black boxes would become a mandatory feature of all vehicles.

How many lives would be saved if those devices automatically reported bad drivers and either fined them until they got the message or removed them from our roads altogether.

nothing but not everyone can be trusted to do so, but i get your point

they used to have a lot of no limit roads back in the day in NT and other places didn't they
>>
>>128591628
this,
I went to my home town for the weekend which is about three hours drive and I was on 150 like half the way. if I saw a bend or a car ahead I slowed down. the thing that made me feel uncomfortable was on the way back home yesterday was a bunch of classic cars (I guess they were at a show) going 75 in the middle of nowhere on a 100k road. pissed me off heaps and they were lumped together so it held a bunch of us up behind them.
they were driving decent cars, there was a 67 mustang and an old chev. who the fuck gets a muscle car and drives it like a grandpa?
>>
>>128592311
The stuart highway used to be no limits, then they introduced 130 km/h limits in 2007. I think I remember reading the accident rate either went up or stayed the same after they put limits on it.
>>
>>128592650
I'm surprised they were driving them at all, too many idiots buy nice old cars and never drive them. I figure if you're going to buy an old fast car, you should at least drive it the way it was designed for.
>>
>>128592836

>proves that open speed limits work and motorists aren’t so stupid as to consistently ride or drive outside their comfort zone
this is the best point, if I'm unfamiliar with the road or cant see whats ahead I'm not going to go hard. I think most people appreciate that there is a risk and that comes into play as common sense

>the previous government spent $4.4 million upgrading the Stuart Highway to suit the higher speeds. It also allocated $2.5 million to clear vegetation from the edge of the highway, widen curves and improve the marking and signage.
that's a pretty funny point, even though I lived near there I never went as far north as alice so I don't know that bit of road. the furthest north I've been is near finke.
>>
>>128595176
There's an idea that to set speed limits, you remove limits and measure what speed people drive at, then set the limit to whatever is the median speed. I too think most people aren't stupid enough to drive too fast.
>>

This is why I think the self driving uber/Tesla services will be a big hit here. Car dealers are going to have to lobby the government to reduce car taxes and rego or else their industry will be decimated once Tesla and uber starts their self driving network here

>>
>>128599266
I don't think that'll happen. Anyone who uses these services will need to have a membership and I'm sure self driving cars will have surveillance cameras. If you vandalize a self driving car whilst using their service, they can track you via logs and security cameras and ban you from their services
>>
>>128596179
That idea is not a very good idea.

Speed limits aren't just set by how fast YOU can comfortably/safely drive, it needs to take into account pedestrians in the area and any businesses/houses beside the road where cars would slowly be entering the roadway.

We have highways where we would comfortably drive 75mph but the speed limit is 35mph because there are business beside the road and it would be impossible to get onto the highway.

Sorry, speed limits are already set in a much smarter way than you propose
>>
>>128599931
>Sorry, speed limits are already set in a much smarter way than you propose

Not really. There are quite a number of places near me where the speed limit is ridiculously high for what's actually there (stupid asian pedestrians) and then super low considering the lack of pedestrian traffic/driveways (50kph for 5km of paddocks).
