I think this problem is central to how humans work and not specific to "racists".

It's like there are two motivations for people to make a statement:
> How true is it?
> How will it help me?

And it seems that the latter motivation always outweighs the first. The first motivation just seems to be a "nice to have" and not "need to have". If the truth contradicts with our statement - and the statement benefits us - we build our own rules/universe/religion, where we can claim the statement to be true.

No matter if a statement is true or not, a statement can contain information, which changes the place of people in a hierarchy.
And humans want to climb the hierarchy - not fall from it.

So a claim like "OP is a faggot" might be true. However, this statement will only help me, if I appear as if it is the truth, because my goal is for OP to fall down the hierarchy and be laughed at. So I have to convince OP and the audience, that I am in control of the truth and situation.

I could also say that niggers are dumber than white people, but why would I say that? I believe it to be the truth, but that does not imply that I would say it.

You have to look at the bigger picture.
Zoom out from your individualistic world view, and you will find that the stereotypes are correct.
Once arrived at this conclusion, you don't have to feel bad, you will in fact realize that it is perfectly natural to be racist.
Sure, your sand/nigger neighbor might be a good hard working guy, but zoom out and look at them as a group, and you will find they are on average damaging to society, socially and economically.
