EMT/Firefighter here. You do it so you don't injure others inside and outside the car. A lot of secondary injuries can be avoided by wearing the seal belt. Such as not head smashing an 8 year old in the backseat because you decided not to wear the seat belt. It's not for your safety, but the safety of others.
