Christian altruism. You had a bloc of Christian nations called Europe. They got their shit pushed in for 400 years, twenty generations, before they began to defend themselves appropriately. Current Europe has kept the altruism, but lost the values. After the pushback, the catholic church came to centralize a lot of power as while the church is the house of god, it's operation is the work of affluent men who for all of their 'piousness', are still human. Power corrupts, and the end result is tyranny and then reform. Reform implies your faith fragments further, and such fragmentation will be bloody, at least for a while.
