Look at the amount of militant Muslims. A huge portion of them ARE taking it literally and if you consider the teaching of taqqiya it makes it reasonable to be suspect of them all. The only way to not be judged by the books you claim to religiously follow is to not. By the same token it's reasonable to judge Jews based on the Talmud also.
