There are more than a few, but one issue is that many towns are built almost entirely for driving rather than walking.

So you will mostly see people driving from and too malls or from and to schools and maybe to a bar. Sometimes a park or beach.

But there are usually less places in a city where people walk to and / or just chill. And less adjacent places where they also do the same and business.

If we want to talk about a country that has a severe lack of nice towns and small cities look no further than Australia

>Colonisation and massive population growth took place after technological advances meant that fewer towns had to be built (Vast majority of small towns in the modern world are redundant and only exist because people already live there)

There are some nice small cities and Australia, but far too few. Usually they're ones that are inland far enough to avoid just being consumed by a major city, and they were founded some time in the early 1800's.

As for nice small towns, they're nearly non-existent. Any small town that was wealthy enough to build nice architecture and set aside land for beautification would very rapidly develop into a city, which leaves you with towns that only exist as towns because they're too poor to grow any further. There are nice small towns, but they still pale in comparison to American or European small towns because they've mostly been developed in the past 100, and especially last 50 years so the architecture just isn't very good.

Many of those that exist only do so by accident.

Pic related (Galena, IL) was a mining boomtown in the 1820s and kept all of its original architecture because people had pretty much forgotten it existed by the 1950s.

This allowed the comfy old buildings to make it through the "danger zone" (50s-70s?) when so many other places got MODERN'D, and the place now thrives as a tourist town.
