Why is the west standing by helplessly as China moves ahead in various fields of science? China recently finished a gigantic 500m-diameter radio telescope. It makes the previous largest US-run radio telescope in Puerto Rico look like a tiny contact lens.
And yet, no western nation has any plans to build a bigger radio telescope - for now, China has won the radio telescope race.
Why is this? During the Cold War, each side would panic over advances by the other side, and work hard to even things up. But now? Westerners have no will to compete.
