What do you think of the 2007 phenomenon? It's often said on multiple boards to be the one year it all went wrong. Was 2006 the last year to feel "normal"?

I was admin of a gaming website back then and I remember how much drama there was caused by 14 year old Ron Paul tards spamming threads about how Bush is trying to end democracy and is building concentration camps. Promising to literally commit suicide if Paul didn't win. Wonder where they are now.

Graduated high school in the Spring of '05.

This is the time period when social media was starting to take off. If memory serves it was that Fall when MySpace really took off despite it being around for a while. Before MySpace there was something called Xanga. This is when the internet really matured and the way we communicate changed forever. It was 2007 when Facebook really took off and cemented social media as permanent. It's very sad. I can remember having the feeling in '07 that something had changed. This was a separate feeling from me starting to grow up.

2007 was the year that a bunch of idiots flooded CP on /b/, which (tinfoil time, but probably true) got the FBI involved and if certain pasta is to be believed, regardless of who "owns" 4chan, the servers are owned by the feds and have been monitored ever since.
Double tinfoil starts when you theorize when they went from monitoring to actively using/influencing or when other agencies got involved.
It definitely was only /b/ that changed drastically. I was on /sp/, here, and /mu/ a lot, some refugees from /b/ successful integrated, but /b/ never recovered. Now, it's like the thing has had a damn lobotomy. Other boards seemed to devolve due to suddenly hands-off modding. /sp/ especially.
>>
>>127667546
I came to 4chan in 2006. Chanology started in 2007 or 2008 and was the first time 4chan really got a national/international spotlight and tons of cancerous newfags came in. A lot of people are comparing the_donald newfags to that time.

Then m00t changed the front page to be more user-friendly to accomodate newfags. Then people trolled TIME and made m00t #1, he gave a little speech and tons more people got exposed to 4chan. News agencies kept writing about it. It's only gotten worse as time has gone on. And last year Hillary got as close as possible to mentioning 4chan as you can without actually saying the name, in a public presidential campaign speech.

So, as much as a newfag in 2006 can say, 2007 or 2008 was the start of public exposure for 4chan. Worst thing before that was the habbo shit.
>>
>>127667546
I'd probably agree. It went wrong when YouTube went super mainstream. I miss the days when you'd find these really neat, niche YouTubers with a comfy 500 subscribers. Back then, 500 subs actually meant something and people didn't make their livings off of the site.
>>
Does anybody here remember DAN ELECTRONICS?
Holy fuck I miss the days before 4chan became mainstream.
I miss people like Xenon, I miss the attitude the Japanophilia, the art and soul.

2005 was the last year that felt normal to me. Not quite as innocent as pre-9.11, but still naive enough to think things would somehow go back to the way they had been before.
I lost my good job in 2006 when they consolidated and moved overseas. It's never been happy for me since, just periods of less stress or minimal despair. I'm just along for the ride at this point. I don't really have high expectations for my future anymore.
This last couple of years has been so batshit insane that I kinda hope the leftists get every god damn thing they wish for.

As far as I remember, /b/ died out as a cultural powerhouse around 2010. Their old memes became reddit material and they have made almost nothing good since, just a few notable raids.

Its silly to think it was a certain year. Things happened incrementally. The worst was probably from 2001-2004 when the jobs first started leaving and all sorts of new laws for "security". Then the housing crisis, great recession, etc.

Seriously the first 3/4ths of 2007 were looking bright.

As a cultural influence, then yeah, you right.
As a creative content generator, nope. Peak /b/, which I was lucky enough to see just before the grey area purge, was a constant stream of laughs, shocks, and stories.
But yeah, now it's unforgivable garbage, just a bunch of preteens looking for boobs. /b/ was always a little immature, but like I said earlier, they behave lobotomy tier now.
Same with /x/. /x/ had a really good run when it first started, just to get the creepy threads off /b/, but I don't know what happened there.

I think the equity markets became centrally planned around 2007. Now they are completely controlled by Central Banks. Before 2007 you could see trouble coming from equity valuations. Now those valuations are held up by governments. So it was really the year that market based valuations completely died.

07 was the actual start of gfc imo, leading onto huge wealth consolidation and strange financial conditions.

Culturally; YouTube, fb, MySpace got rolling with the normies - I think the fulcrum moment for fb was when they made an agreement with Hotmail to auto add all contacts in fb.

This got us off msn messenger and started the great virtue signalling that later became known as (((social media)))

It was also the start of what will become known as the hyper inflation event of events. Later on when bernake (then head of teh phed reserve) spoke about helicopter money if qe didn't work.. aka stimulus.

Back in 2010/11 it would have taken 171000ish bit coins to buy a 1.2 mil house, now it's more like 500. My math isn't exact, but u get it I'm sure.

Look at one thing and one thing alone, seriously.
Nothing else.
THIS
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPhone_(1st_generation)

Everyone else is wrong, this is what caused the shift.
Because before hand cellphones were literally just for talking and at best texting, playing little snake or tetris games.

This changed everything and it happened in 2007.

Because media was suddenly everywhere with you. Movies, music, text, calls, email, internet.

You became oversaturated, even still maybe not you yourself, but the masses became oversaturated.

It hasn't stopped since, constant stimuli.
Humans are not meant to have constant stimuli, we literally just sat at times for hours before the internet and tv. We use to work hard and come home and do absolutely nothing.
It was a way to relax truly relax.
We no longer do this, it was a form of meditation almost.
>>
>>127671908
2007 was all wrong. Market should have started correcting in 2007. It didn't. In fact, the market went ape shit when housing prices went down. Fall of 2007 was when you couldn't sell anything in FL anymore.

Now it's just a farce. Last week China got downgraded, and the market didn't flinch. Because there is no market anymore. It's all Central banks now. But the milder version of what happens now started in 2007.

2007 is the year where everything that made the 2010's so shitty took off.
>Vidya games got normalfag'd to death after CoD 4 and Halo 3 and the "casual CoD audience" that every game dev these days goes after was born
>The internet got normalfag'd after Faceberg and Twatter took off, paving the way for a shitton of cyber gentrification
>Proto SJWs subverted a small group of SomethingAwful users, eventually leading to the creation of r/SRS and the spread of SJWism onto plebbit
>The recession happened leading to the shitty job and housing markets we have today.
>The iPhone was released to the unwashed masses
>Obama's candidacy gave birth to the modern left's race baiting and identity politics they've grown so accustomed to using
Sure shit was getting bad for the first few years but it all went to hell in 2014. The SJW censorship, retarded normalfaggotry, and insane politics reached their crescendo that year.

Sometimes I wonder if 2017 will be looked back on as the 2007 of the 2020's.

Everything went to shit for me in 2007 as well. The sad part is I didn't even think about it until this thread. Let's see here.
Fiance left me in 2007 for my best friend.
Lost almost all my friends because of the whole Fiance thing.
Lost my job, it was a good job, due to depression.
Lost my house.
One of the few friends I had left died in front of me.
Lost my new job due to accumulated depression.

I was really into online stuff and didn't really pay attention to the outside world. I was always pretty withdrawn, but around '06 I got really heavy into online gaming and the Internet and was pretty out of it until 2011. That's when I started working and was only in pretty working class culture and didn't notice that sort of stuff. It really wasn't until 2013 when I started school and gave up on the Internet for a long time that I really noticed how different culture had become.

I still feel pretty distant from popular culture so it doesn't really have any effect on me

Oh man, I remember staying up all night with my friends on Vent, playing Counterstrike Source and Broodwar.

Fuck that was fun.

I really liked having Myspace back in Middle School. Like, you could still socialize and share photos with your friends, but it was still sort of secret, you know? Like a club house vibe with no adults, and finding a cool music video was still really special because YouTube hadn't really taken off yet around 2005-2007. It was just a cool time to grow up, before smartphones ruined the milieu.

AND FLIP PHONES MAN. I remember one time I was fucking my girlfriend, and she was int kinky shit, and wanted me to take a picture of me putting my cock inside her. SO I BUST OUT my fucking Zoolander mini cellphone and take a pic, but the lighting and resolution were all shit and pixelated, so we agreed to delete it out of shame, lol. Good times, fuck...

I also remember how I looked forward to growing up and getting an apartment and going to college, but none of it turned out like I imagined it :(. The crash in '08 and all the political shit that's happened since really fucked up the vibe for me.

SomethingAwful users trolled a feminist group back in 2007 because they found a post about a woman looking to punish her son because she caught him fapping. One thing led to another and eventually that feminist group managed to subvert a few Goons who later moved on to create SRS around 2008/09.

In 2006, I graduated from college, got a shitty job, and looked for a real job.

By 2007, it was obvious that job was never coming. I adjusted to the reality that I would not start my life on time.

By 2008, it was clear that this was the new normal for everyone, not just me.

by 2009, everyone had lost all hope. The market died in front of our eyes.

By 2010, I could start to see that non-whites didn't want to be equal to us after all -- they wanted to destroy us. I could see that women wanted to hurt men too, and that feminism wasn't about rights, but about blame.

by 2011, I was redpilled and angry.

by 2012, I was praying the mayans were right.

by 2013, I had already created adaptive strategies for people who assumed I was a piece of shit for being a straight white male.

by 2014, I was blackpilled and actively sabotaging others who I used to be aligned with.

by 2015, I began practicing kabbalah to help bring the end.

I am now surrounded by the red light. Its swirling fires are my blood and its anthem is devastation. I am a vessel for its purifying flames and my crucible shall be known to some as The War of Great Lies. From my loins pours forth the destiny of the righteous and from my mouth the inverted solar logos. I have come to eat souls.

2007 was the year when a dark and malevolent realization within the depths of many people's minds came to be: the subconscious realization that we all live in a world burdened by falsehood, that everyone is without compass, that everything you thought you knew is wrong, that most of humanity is doomed and you need only look on the Internet to see why.

>Walmart wounded the local shops, amazon killed raped and ate them.

And the '08 recession left a lasting impact that retail never recovered from. Most companies really should have seen it coming though. The gradual decline started in the 60S/70s when department stores left their fancy flag ship stores in major cities after the second to last wave of white flight hit. Then Macy's began buying them out by having less overhead expenses and being better suited to the new mall environments. The 80s and 90s gradually saw the end of quality shopping experiences and the favoring of cheapness and abundance of sales, which kept getting crappier exponentially until the recession hit, made things worse, and then Amazon and online shopping exploded. The issue was that they had so diminished the quality of the actual shopping experience that it became irrelevant and people would pursue the cheapest and easiest way to acquire goods, which became Amazon and other online services

I'm not exactly sure that was a significant event of ~2007, specifically, but god knows it's a major contributor to how we've come here. When I was a kid, my hometown had a huge variety of bookstores, hobby shops, independent record and video game stores, places to buy musical instruments and accessories, skateshops, outdoor suppliers. Whatever your niche was there was a place for it and they all had their own inventory and offers and it was an exploration just to see what they had.

I guess it was around 2005 that I saw those places beginning to close, but it was around 2006-2007 it peaked and by 2009 it was fucking done. Everything was homogenized. I can get on google streetview in any state and find, time and time again, that exact same stripmall you just described, and I'll be fucked if I can pagan bookstore half a block from the martial arts supply store, like the block I grew up within biking distance of.

Even the electronic stuff has gone to shit. Trance used to be a very experimental genre where I would just drift off in a dark room alone with no drugs and no alcohol into another world of weird sounds, while the dj slowly mixed tracks. There's now """extended mixes""" that are less than five minutes long, when most tracks used to be 7 or 8 and many were longer than 10 or 12. The sound design is shit now too, so many presets and vengeance loops.

Nothing like this gets made anymore, although Lange did a pretty good remix of it...

Maybe, but they don't seem very self aware.
Like here for example we post gore and other "unacceptable" shit to scare off the normies, but also because we aren't shaken by it.
If you can stomach something terrible it keeps the faggots and women out.
Just look at the "alt right."
Most of them aren't nazis. They just do this shit to piss people off. And even then they've become far too mainstream for /pol/ to accept and we've essentially had to disown our own child. It's like a never ending search for a cohesive coherent ideology untainted by platitudes and boring political correctness.
Maybe they don't even recognize it. The_donald certainly doesn't and yet they're part of it.
There might be something to the hipsters who always complain about the mainstream. The mainstream seems to be toxic and kill everything it touches.
>>
>>127681879
this was roughly the time that everyone knew that the world had become "weird." Before the early 90s, people behaved in predictable fashions and were mostly normal. Social decorum and behavioral norms were all dissolved by the early 90s.

In the movie, "Mrs. Doubtfire," Robin Williams plays a cartoon voice actor who gets a divorce and decides to put on an old lady suit and pretend to be en elderly Scottish woman so that he can be a nanny to his own kids. In this movie, there is a scene where he is on a date and his family shows up to the restaurant, so he has to go back and forth, changing in the bathroom. He gets drunk and makes mistakes as the night goes on, and he comes back to the table wearing lipstick and makeup and earrings. His date is confused and asks him why he has these things on.

He pauses, shrugs, and says .... "Hey... It's the '90s."

We were self-aware that the rules of society were dead by the time that movie came out. That line itself was a major marker of decline for anyone who was paying attention.

I'm 27 and feel the same way except I can remember them. Going places was fun back then. I had no goal when I left the house but found something fun to do every time I did. And it wasn't just because I was a kid. There were fun stores to go to, festivals to wander around, local food shops to try out, people playing sports at parks, flying kites, launching model rockets. Even just chilling in a populated area and people watching was energizing.
You know what I spent my teenage years (2007) doing? Just fucking driving around looking for something to do.
My graduating class hung out in parking lots. We went to Walmart when we were bored.
I would just get in my car with my friends turn on my ipod and aimlessly drive looking for anything interesting and I never found it. We'd end up at a fast food joint, go walk around walmart and buy some candy, and then say fuck it and go play halo at somebody's house.
The only activity we could consistently rely on was the movies.

Imagine a world without the popularity of reddit and facebook, before the financial crash, before people even cared about the NSA, before globalism and mass immigration finally conquered the world, when western countries were still white and had a common culture and shared history, when the US was reasonably wealthy and still had a middle class. I think that was a tipping point for humanity as a whole. The people who caused the greatest economic crisis in 70 years got to coast on Uncle Sam while the rest of us took the fall. When we saw that there were no consequences, that a man in a suit can bet the world and lose it without a dime in fines or a night in jail, something broke in us collectively. We just plain stopped giving a fuck. Got Osama? Whoopee. Contractor reveals the existence of the greatest illegal spying ring in world history being perpetrated by our own government? Keep in mind that demographics always change. If there hadn't been minorities I'd bet you'd see more Italians than Swedes over time, etc cte. Demographics always change, even with closed borders. You'd see more birth rates among the middle class. Some areas would have the poor displaced by the rich. That's how demographics works.

And you'd have perhaps some areas where "native Californians" would be displaced by those moving in from out of state, or Czech-ancestry people displacing French-ancestry Americans.

What worries me isn't change per se, it's the scale of the change.
