There is a huge surplus of young men and women the economy doesn't really need. Having them back home doing nothing would cause a lot of problems. Maybe a massive conscription program with a 5-10 years mandatory military service is what the western world needs to uncuck itself.

Jesus, Étienne, do you really think that's wise? If you create an army that large someone will want to use it. You'd also end up with a large population of people with military training, almost everyone eventually. That's bound to be destabilizing. Look at what happened in South Korea.

Because you need to convince people to go into it somehow. Also the military in many parts operates inefficiently which is expected of something with such a massive bureaucracy, especially a government one which needs to meet certain quotas, etc. They basically pay way more than they should to defense contractors too among other things.
