Tell me about Spain before the Spanish Civil War.
Who were the CNT, and what did they do to spark a civil war?
Pls help me understand this seemingly meaningless war.

The Spanish Civil War is actually one of the coolest conflicts that ever happened.
Spain's Republic was a complete fucking mess, it made Weimar look good by comparison. Maybe it's cause the Spanish left did NOT get subtle subversion the way the German, American or British left did.
Instead of doing stuff like making films that had marxist themes the Spanish socialists just sort of chimped hard and started murdering priests. It was a complete shit show.
The right were in power when the commies started doing this, so they sent in military men to crush the living shit out of the leftist rebels, then the left decided "we really gotta stop these nationalists" and decided to band together with groups they normally hate (centre-leftists, centrists, "republicans") in the next elections.
They won, and the fear on the right was that they'd go even harder than they already did when they murdered the priests while they weren't in power. Turns out they were somewhat right.
The right initiated a military rebellion against the left and republican "Popular Front", and the whole thing was brutal af. Commies raping nuns, Nationalists starving commies in their cities
The Germans and Italians sent their armies to support Franco, and the Soviets put in a some nice, limpdicked effort to stop them.
The Americans and the Brits stayed out of the conflict because they preferred the fascists, but didn't want to look partisan or get their hands dirty.

Yes, I know that much, but what caused the war? Who was in the "right?" Can you recommend any books or films about it?

I forever envision thicc dragons now...
Thanks Japon.

You really shouldn't look at these things to find who was in the "right", dude. But if you musts, pick one:
>Nationalists were in the wrong because they rebelled against a democratically elected government
>Nationalists were in the right because commies spilt first blood in their earlier rebellion

You forgot that they tried to make a revolution in 1934.

Look for books by Stanley G. Payne. In particular you can read "The Collapse of the Spanish Republic, 1933-1936: Origins of the Civil War"
>Yes, I know that much, but what caused the war?
The spark that initiated it was the assassination of José Calvo Sotelo, a right wing politician by the Guardia de Asalto (some kind of police force). But the deep roots are, like always "the left push the right more to the right and right push the left more to the left".
Also, in the 1936 election a "Popular front" won the elections (well, technically "stole" the election. The acting president Portela Valladares gave them the control of the government before the counting of the votes ended, so they altered it in their favour) and they decide that the police doesn't have the obligation of stopping the crimes committed by leftists. So, you can imagine.... The idea in the government was "the right will revolt and we will crush them rightfully".

Anarchists, I think that answers both questions.
