The terminology comes from the Estates General which was the old French Parliament during the French Revolution (1789 - 99). The deputies that sat on the left were those that supported the revolution, and the ones who sat on the right tended to prefer the institutions of the Ancien Regime.

What does that have to do with politics today? Not much, but the media uses it as shorthand so people know who the good guys and bad guys are. All sorts of different ideologies and movements have been 'left' or 'right'. And the meaning of 'left' and 'right' changes over time and depending on which country or even region of your country that you're in.

OP's confusion is entirely natural and understandable. And it's a feature of the system. If Leon Trotsky and Bill Clinton are both 'left' and Adolf Hitler and Friedrich Hayek are both 'right' then how can these labels be used in any meaningful analysis? They can't. And that's the whole point.

It's a shadow theatre designed to turn you into someone who mindlessly supports a team. They want politics to be like baseball - you've got your team and that's who you're rooting for. You can trace this all the way back to Constantinople in the 5th and 6th centuries. They had chariot teams called 'Blues' and 'Greens' whose supporters started to control local politics for the benefit of their own faction.

The most dangerous ideologies and politicians are those that break out of the Left/Right paradigm. The regime tends to eliminate or marginalise them pretty quickly. National Socialism is the classic synthesis of left and right. Mussolini's Fascism is another good example - he actually started out as an avowedly left-wing leader of a Socialist party. In the 90s Blair & Clinton and many others espoused the 'Third Way' which was supposed to be an updated left/right synthesis. It was really just rule by the banking cabal dressed up in fancy language.
