I was making shit money before, during, and lost my job just before it peaked. Spent 3 years on the streets, worked my way off the streets, into a halfway house, then worked another 2 years doing ballpark concessions and parking till I had the $$ to buy a car for cash (no credit), that all lead to an IT job I picked up through my church and connections through the boss of the car parking gig, now I have a company car, my own house (again) make 6 figures a year.

Somehow made it off the streets with only a bum knee to show for my time out there (torn meniscus I just never bothered to get fixed since I couldn't afford the time off, and didn't have the insurance for it, I'm sorta paranoid now about losing my job and home so I refuse to take the 2-4 weeks off i'd need to take to get the surgery to fix it, so I just "cope")

learned all about what "real" hard work was thanks to it, I like to think I became a much better person thanks to this too. But it does suck I lost a whole decade thanks to that. rolling onto 40 and I'm staring at life with no family now.

I made a ton of money after the recession . I bought my first house just after the market crashed for nothing. It has a little apartment in the basement and I rented it out right after Rents exploded. I used that money to buy a second rental. Really the recession was the best thing that ever happened to me.

I was in highschool. But my mother worked in medicine, nothing high up, but decent enough gig to stick around. My dad did finish work, not construction. Surprisingly a shit ton of people who still needed his skill set.

Also being immigrants from bumfuck Eastern Europe made my parents suspicious of shit so they never used credit cards, only payed in cash, had been stockpiling money and resources.

We did fine. But my "rich" friends lives were fucking shattered by the dozens.

Some made it through, some still on their way down the tubes.

When they started using Mortgages as "bundled investments" it encouraged a GLUT of building; shitty condos going up all over with cheap Mexican labor (haven't seen a condo built in the last 20 years that wasn't suing the builder) but the costs kept going up up up. Then--BOOM! Shitload of wired in empty lots near where I was in WA State sat there for three years. Construction dropped, people got laid off. Trade unemployment here was 20%. I lost my house NOT because I was stupid (decent rate, and could afford it) but I couldn't pay 2 years of mortgage without working. I lost everything. I lost my job, my belongings, my car, and all my savings. I was living on borrowed cash from other broke people at the time. I was on unemployment for 2 years.

After finally getting a new job I slowly started saving all my money, lived like I was poor, paid off all my debts. Educated myself on economics, depression, finances, and recessions. Paid attention to trends, paid attention to warning signs. Would jump ship if the company I was at was about to tank. Finally, I was laid off again back in 2013. Because of everything I learned I was fully prepared. I had huge savings, no debt, paid off working car,

wife lost her job, mine cut my hours more than half. We wouldn't have survived except for my wife. She got ruthless. She planted potatoes. She stopped our netflix and extraneous expenses like that. She timed the kids showers. She spent her days on coupons and bartering and selling off stuff we didn't need, packing the kids lunches, and squeezing every damn nickle to make the mortgage. I took odd jobs wherever I could get, and she was relentless with the mortgage company on the phone, kept us no more than 90 days behind (their threshold to start foreclosure threats), put us on their help program, even got them to let us pay just the interest once or twice.

We lived off some credit cards for a period, because they can't take your house. Those issues that caused are over.
Neighbors across the street had horrendous fights, then finally they just abandoned their house and went their separate ways. But we dug in as a couple, and even though we worried, we worried together.

I had an on-and-off girlfriend who loved me, but who I just didn't love quite as much. I was sort of despairing about my own impact on the world-- I wanted to go to Law School, but everyone else was doing it in 2009/2010 and I knew the result would be a flood of lawyers.

Luckily, my old work called when they had budget. They rehired me. I got top performance reviews. And then was hired to another company for $110k a year, which at 26, with no grad school, in a non-STEM role, is decent. My life recovered since then, but I think back to those wasted years-- without the catastrophe, I would have hit my $1M a year by 30 goal.

The squadron First Sergeant assigned me to work details as punishment, but surreptitiously observed me to see if I was just lazy (I learned this from my mother years later, with whom he was in phone contact).

The base commander summoned me to his office and gave me an immense tongue-lashing.

They finally realized I was a good guy who was just depressed, so they kicked me out in 2005 on a "general under honorable conditions" discharge rather than giving me a dishonorable.

Then I went to stay with my grandmother from 2005-2015. She took care of me, but later on I took much more care of her, doing all the cooking, cleaning, doing it well, driving her to appointments... and when she broke her hip and got on a downward spiral, I was at the hospital with her every day for months until the end.

She was a secret millionaire due to old family investments (just a few million). It surprised the entire family. Now I have my own upscale apartment, a nice $20,000 car, nice computer, nice stuff, keep my shit super-neat, but I'm fairly solitary, estranged from family, and a hermit.

I don't work. I only play vidya, read, eat snacks, and masturbate all day and live off my inheritance.

I'll eat the shotgun soon, maybe this year or next.

Just putting forward the argument... Spending on the military is a necessity for any government. Beyond that, if you're expecting the government to spend money to raise GDP, the money has to be spent wisely. If every dollar the government spends isn't producing more than $1 in the real economy (or more than $2 if it's deficit spending), there's really no point in spending it. Spending on highways, grid, ports, etc. by government can be a good thing if done wisely. Even Keynes understood this basic concept which is completely lost on the left. I was simply saying that Republicans aren't opposed to spending anything, we just don't want to spend on something that is guaranteed not to create a real return (like niggers).

In many ways I haven't.

I was born in 1990, at the age of 18 I was studying, I was doing well getting a's for A levels, I had wasted my first year of higher education following my friends to an art based degree, even though I am an Autist. They wouldn't take me for the second year stating that I'm wasting time. The second year I applied too late to really get onto courses worth a damn I noped the fuck out of the sociology course the college threw me on, alongside media studies, and photography, all equally worthless, apparently I was scum for not taking the baby into the bunker in THAT little 'exercise', I lasted a week.

For the third year I planned ahead applied early and got spots in the Scientific fields suited for me and I was doing excellently. The work was too easy. Unfortunately my single mothers finances weren't, and now that child bennies had dried up I was tossed out onto the street. She made up an awful bunch of bullshit to justify it and threw me at the mercy of the state to house, with no money, assets, nothing.

I tried to continue with college, I was asked to stop attending a month later, I was what they called "sofa surfing" most of the nights, the state was unable to help. I was starting to look more and more like a vagrant with each passing day, this I believe prompted them to reject my admission, something they wouldn't do generally.

So I entered the job market with nothing but some GCSE's to mention, I didn't have an address but instead had to rely on care of addresses - you want to guess how successful those applications were? Honestly even with one, it wouldn't have changed a thing, there just wasn't any work to go around.

I graduated shortly after the GFC, so you can imagine what a depression riddled time I had.

Everyone else who graduated either ended up on unemployment or simply gave up and started doing illegal shit. I myself was attending multiple interviews per day, 5 days a week, for 3 years straight until my degree simply became obsolete due to the passage of time.

Every position I was being interviewed for had hundreds of applicants, one even had THOUSANDS. Unless you had a family member who could secure you something, then you were basically fucked.
