Monogamy was the standard set by a certain religion so that betas could breed and be productive members of society. On the one hand it took the pressure off fighting for a spot on the mating totem pole so we could develop hobbies and technology and concentrate on improving quality of life for people but on the other hand it flooded the gene pool with beta tier genetics which is why humanity is where it is now.
